That Time I Was a VOTY Honoree at BlogHer15

Hi friends!! So I know technically Blogher ’15 was back in July but I know you still wanna hear about my experience, right? Especially since you helped me get there! This was my first time at BlogHer and in New York so it was an entirely new experience for me all around. I’ve been to plenty of blogger events around Southern California but nothing like Blogher which was huge! I attended my way, which meant I skipped a lot of the panels and only attended the ones that interested me. Two of my favorite panels were the Storytelling from the LGBTQ POV and the Storytelling About  ...

How to Prepare for a Last-Minute Road Trip

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #DropShopAndOil #CollectiveBias I am all about road trips! I don’t want to say that I’m a road trip champ because I don’t take them as often as I’d like but! I will say that I am a last-minute road trip champ! I am all about OMG! Let’s go! so many times that I have formulated a routine now that includes important things like car maintenance, because how can you go on a road trip if your car isn’t ready? So these are the things that I do before almost  ...

SoFab U on the Road Is Coming to a City Near You!

Hey friends! So a little over a week ago, I got to attend  SoFab U on the Road Los Angeles and it was A-MAZ-ING. SoFab U on the Road is a one day conference with information you can implement immediately to improve your blog. The conference had its first stop in LA at the super fun Speedzone – so if you missed it, you definitely missed out. But! #SoFabUOTR is also coming to a town near you. Trust me, if you’re near any of these cities, do your best to make it out: Miami, Phoenix, Seattle, Cincinnati, Dallas, New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, Atlanta, or Bentonville! SoFab-ers  ...

Travel “Love” Is a Bug You Can Catch

Travel “love” is a bug you can catch, like malaria. Only you will recover much quicker (hopefully). Aria & I were talking about the vortex of magic you enter when you travel to a new place (or in my case, experience new things in a place I’ve been to before). I’m going to call it the travel vortex. You are in this place, out of your physical and environmental element and you are doing all of these new things. If you are at all social, you are also meeting new people. You are vulnerable but it’s a happy and excited vulnerability. You are susceptible  ...

No-Bake Cherry Almond Pecan Granola Bars

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and Quaker. All opinions are mine alone. #CollectiveBias #LoveMyCereal #QuakerUp Hi friends! Aria & I are going on a big road trip from Los Angeles to Portland, OR in two days and I wanted to make something that we could bring with us to snack on the road. I was thinking about things we would both eat and I thought of homemade granola cereal bars! This is a last-minute trip for me so I wanted a recipe that was quick and easy. Luckily, Quaker® helped me make that happen! I love breakfast foods in general and have a soft spot in my  ...

Riverside DIY Print Fest: Or the Zine Community Owns My Heart

On May 18th, I tabled at the Riverside DIY Print Fest. I’ve been to a number of zine fests before but this one is probably my favorite. It’s small, intimate, and the organizers are amazing. I love that it’s low-key and there’s not a lot of pressure to like sell your shit (although selling your shit is definitely awesome!), but more about building community and getting to know other people (and seeing friends) doing awesome things. The speakers were amazing. I also highly appreciate that their backdrop was Grumpy Cat! From left to right, top row: the sweetest Stacy  ...

Date Day at the Monterey Bay Aquarium

“If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in the water” Loren Eiseley This was stop #2 for my three-year anniversary with my partner, Dameon. He grew up going to the Monterey Bay Aquarium but it was my first time. As a lover of animals and sea creatures in particular, the whole day was magical and breathtaking. Highlights for me were seeing the two different jellyfish exhibits and touching a sting ray. The image above was an art exhibit by Katharine Harvey made with trash found in the ocean. I love how beautiful it is but it’s also a huge tangible reminder to be  ...

Date Day in San Luis Obispo

My partner, Dameon, and I celebrated our three-year anniversary in March by driving up the California coast. It was beautiful and amazing in so many ways. We stopped in San Luis Obispo along the way and visited the Mission and the Oddfellows Cemetery. I am a sucker for Catholic iconography and cemeteries so both places were natural stops for me. I didn’t know my grandma named a small town after me! Really though, I just had to take a photo of this rest stop sign along the way, you know, representin’ as a gorda in Gorda. 🙂 The outside grounds were small but stunning. There was  ...

Body Positive Beach Day

Back in May,**  Jessica and Margitte hosted a Body Positive Beach Day down in San Diego. Tasha and I drove down from LA to attend and I personally was excited but not quite knowing what to expect. What I got was a group of extremely friendly people all sitting and swimming around loving their bodies. We had power that day, power in size, power in numbers. I’ve been to other fat activist events before and usually left feeling too small or like I didn’t fit in. Because we were all over the size spectrum in San Diego, I didn’t once question whether or not I belonged –  ...
