Fatshion: Palm Springs Looks
Hey friends. How are you all holding up? This is a tough time for the US (not that this is new but still). The alt-right fascist push-back we get from any progress we make is disgusting but not surprising. As non-black folks, especially for white folks, we must do the work to combat white supremacy. Please don’t be a bystander. The safety of our community is at stake. Also please don’t expect ally cookies for your work – white people, it is your responsibility, as a privileged group that benefits from white supremacy, to work hard to dismantle it, with or without the praise of people of color and black people. Call out your racist family members, coworkers and community members. Uplift the voices of black and poc folks. Show up for the oppressed in whatever capacity you can, whether that be showing up for rallies and marches, giving your money or resources to the folks that need it, or whatever works for you. Just do something.
Even though it seems a bit trivial now, I guess I’ll talk about this outfit. This was my first time wearing a romper. I resisted them for so long because I couldn’t imagine that they would look good on me. But on a recent trip to Forever 21, they had a buy one get one free sale on plus size clothes. So I saw this, loved the style of it, and tried it on. The rest is history. I don’t know if I’m fully on the romper train (with my luck, they’ll be going out of style soon anyway) but I’m on this particular romper train. I love the embroidery and the trim around the shorts. And the color is amazing!
I wore this outfit on a birthday trip to Palm Springs. I hadn’t been there for almost ten years (if not more) so it was fun to give it another visit. The weather was HOT but it was a dry heat that I kind of liked. A friend (that I was dating at the time) took me for my birthday. We had a good time – lots of time in the pool, watching movies, snuggling, and eating. I couldn’t have asked for more. This was the second free trip I’ve gotten to take this summer – the first was house-sitting for my best friend in San Francisco. I’m so grateful for my friends and community for giving me these opportunities as a low-income person.
If you take anything away from this post, please read what I wrote in the beginning of it. I don’t really have the heart to talk about too much else.
